1000 Point Club (Basketball)

Presently we are gathering information on the 1000 point athletes. At this time, we are proud to honor these members of this prestigious club:

  • Senior Lauren Upton (class of 2010), # 13, daughter of Coach Brian Upton and Karen Upton of Dawn, surpassed the 1000th point mark on January 26, 2010, during a victory over Osborne. With 56 seconds left in the game, Lauren swished two free throws to score her 1000th and 1001st points in her career. She became the third Southwest girl to accomplish this feat.

  • Sindy Chavez (class of 2009) - Third all-time leading scorer with 926 points.

  • Kaleb Gilliland - 2005 with 1,322 total points

  • Clint Gilliland

  • John Gilliland

  • Colby Jones

  • Randy Wolcott - 1960 before the 3-point line was added. (Submitted by Kent Bryan)

  • Doug Rawie

  • Dennis Couch - Class of 1974 - 1381 points during three playing seasons, 1971-1974. He also received many honors during his playing days, winning the CLAA scoring title his Senior year, 1973-74. A newspaper article at that time stated that Dennis, at that time in 1974, had probably come near or broken the school scoring record held by Randy Wolcott. Dennis was also the CLAA most valuable player in 1974. (Submitted by Linda Vanlandingham)

  • Carolyn North, a graduate of Southwest in 1968, scored an amazing 1,900 plus points in her high school basketball career. In her senior year, she averaged 35 points a game. In November of 1967, she scored 46 points in a game; and in December of that same year, she scored 48 points in a 66-54 victory against T.A. She was the CLAA lead scorer. Carolyn's final tally was 1,926 points, which is amazing, especially since she missed half of her freshman year after injuring her right knee which forced her out of six games her sophomore year. She saw limited duty in other games her sophomore year because of the injury. In her junior year, Carolyn scored 561 points! Carolyn was an outstanding student as well as an athlete. She received #1 ratings at state music contest on the drums, served on the newspaper staff and yearbook staff, went to Girl's State, on an REA trip to Washington D.C. as the result of winning their essay contest, and graduated a the top her class. Her coach was Jerre Holloway. As far as we know, Carolyn has been the only girl to score over 1,000 points. After graduation, she attended Maryville College.

  • Linda (Cramer) Vanlandingham, class of 1975: Second highest scorer in the girls basketball history scoring 1071 points in three seasons of play from 1972-1975 (1094 points including points from freshman season when elevated to the high school team for two games during the regional tournament at Mendon). Other honors include: CLAA 1st team sophomore, junior and senior years; All-Area, All-District, and All-State Honorable Mention senior year--1975; CLAA Scoring Leader - 1972-73 (2nd place with 355 points and a 14.2 scoring average); 1973-74 (5th place with 320 points and a 12.3 scoring average); 1974-75 (2nd place with a 17.2 scoring average). Linda is the daughter of Dave and Lila Cramer of Ludlow. Linda now lives in Chillicothe, Missouri.

  • Nancy Longwell nearly made the 1000 Point Club for girls by totaling 998 points in 1971. She averaged 28.7 points and led the Southwest team to the conference championship.
